Residential rates

Effective January 1, 2018, SMUD eliminated tier pricing and moved to a flat rate. Rates are slightly higher in the summer than the rest of the year. Beginning in 2019, the Time-of-Day (5-8 p.m.) Rate will become the standard rate for all residential customers. Some customers will move to this rate as early as October 2018, with most customers transitioning to this new rate in early 2019.

What is Time-of-Day?

On Time-of-Day (TOD) rates, when you use electricity is just as important as the amount of electricity you use. You pay different rates for electricity based on the time of day you use it. For example, rates are highest during weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., especially during the summer. Plus, TOD rates give you more control over your bill since you have the ability to shift your electricity use to times when it costs less.

Note: This rate is currently only open to enrollment to customers who own or lease rooftop solar systems or plug-in electric vehicles.
