On the Time-of-Day (5-8 p.m.) Rate, you pay different rates for electricity based on the season and the time of day that you use it. The charts below show the time periods and rates for the non-summer months and summer season.

*If a holiday notes a specific date but the holiday falls on a weekend, the “observed” weekday will not receive the off-peak rate. However, for all holidays that do not list a specific date, the off-peak rate will apply on the “observed” weekday, whether or not the holiday falls on a weekend.
Electric vehicle (EV) discount
Register your EV on My Account to receive a 1.5¢ discount on all electric usage between midnight and 6 AM. For a SMUD account to receive the EV rate credit, a plug-in electric vehicle must be registered with the DMV using the same service address as the SMUD account.
Conserve during peak hours
The goal of Time-of-Day pricing is to reduce how much electricity we use during peak hours. Our need for electricity soars during late afternoon and early evening hours weekdays. This is especially true in the summer.
To meet this higher need, we often have to buy energy from very expensive and less environmentally-friendly sources.
