Free Shade Tree Program

It’s more than just a shade tree.

Thank you for your interest in adding more trees to your yard and to improving our community overall. Since 1990, SMUD, in partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation (Sac Tree), has planted more than 600,000 shade trees in the Sacramento area.

Benefits of shade trees

As the temperatures increase in our region, the need for sustainable urban and community forests also increases. Trees are important because they:

  • Cool our homes naturally and beautify our neighborhoods
  • Store carbon to clean the air we breathe
  • Produce oxygen to improve our health

To address growing environmental concerns, the Sacramento Shade program expanded both the number and types of trees offered; up to 10 free trees per customer and over 30 varieties to choose from.

The American Lung Association recently ranked Sacramento as the 7th most polluted city in the nation. We're working to deliver one of the most aggressive carbon reduction plans in the nation and we can't do it without you.
