Frequently asked questions

Why do you need to replace my meter and how will I know when it’s been replaced?

We replace meters on a regular scheduled maintenance program. The new meters feature the latest technology, improving our outage monitoring and response times, making our electric grid even more reliable. There will be a new meter number on your bill following your meter change.

How do I verify the UPA meter technician is a SMUD contractor?
UPA vehicles will have a SMUD Contractor decal. UPA meter technicians will also carry a SMUD contractor ID. Call UPA at 1-888-208-5890 to verify their identity.

Will the meter technician go into my business?
Only if the meter is inside of your business but most commercial meters are located on the exterior.

Do I need to be present for the meter change?
No, you don’t. However, please ensure clear access to the meter or have someone available to provide access.

Will my power go out?
Most commercial panels allow the meter to be replaced without interruption to electric service. Your Strategic Account Advisor will call you before we replace your meter if we expect a brief interruption.

Is this going to affect my bill?
No, changing out your meter will not impact your bill.

How can I contact my Strategic Account Advisor?
