Power Generation
Power Generation provides a diverse supply of energy in a safe, reliable, efficient, environmentally, financially and legally responsible manner. This department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of SMUD's electricity generating assets including hydro, wind, thermal and solar as well as SMUD’s natural gas pipeline.

Distributed Energy Solutions
Responsible for developing company-wide strategies for customer services, distributed energy solutions and grid improvements to align with SMUD’s resource plan and the growing adoption of customer-owned technologies. The team conducts research and development to support SMUD’s 2030 Zero Carbon Plan and identifies priorities for new technologies and business models. These efforts ensure SMUD delivers safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible energy services while meeting customer expectations in the transition to a zero-carbon future. This team also designs and implements customer programs that drive the adoption and integration of distributed energy resources, such as solar, wind, and other renewable technologies, while enabling SMUD to dispatch these resources efficiently.

Resource Planning
Develops SMUD’s strategy to achieve zero carbon in our power supply by 2030 through our energy portfolio. Establishes long-term energy resource plans and oversees their implementation through SMUD’s Integrated Resources Plan. The team also considers and integrates how new resources will be utilized, including development and management of market strategy to drive SMUD’s participation in, sales to, and use of wholesale energy markets to meet our energy supply needs.

Research & Development (R&D), Grants and Partnerships
The Research & Development, Grants and Partnerships team pursues partnerships and external grant funding to support R&D efforts, as well as existing and new zero carbon projects to achieve our 2030 Clean Energy Vision. They do this by advancing SMUD’s commitment to innovation and sustainability through R&D initiatives – identifying technological advancements and driving projects that will enhance our infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and integrate renewable energy sources into the grid.
