Stay safe and save with winter heating tips

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As overnight and morning temperatures drop into the low 40s, Sacramento families are cranking up their heat. While staying warm is essential, SMUD reminds everyone to keep safety top of mind when heating their homes.

Essential safety tips:

  • Test your safety devices regularly. Make sure smoke detectors work properly and install at least one carbon monoxide detector in your home – carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless killer.
  • Keep open flames outdoors where they belong. Never use propane heaters, barbecues, hibachis, kerosene heaters or camping equipment inside. They produce deadly carbon monoxide that can be fatal to people and pets.
  • Use space heaters safely. Keep electric heaters completely clear on all sides — nothing within three feet. Always turn them off when leaving the room. And remember: your oven, stove or dryer aren't heaters — using them to warm your home is dangerous.
  • Enjoy your fireplace responsibly. Have your chimney professionally inspected annually. Use a proper screen to catch sparks, ensure the damper is open before lighting, and never leave a fire unattended. Skip the lighter fluid — it has no place in your fireplace.
  • Protect the vulnerable. Keep kids and pets away from all heat sources, and make sure blankets, clothing and other flammables stay clear of heaters.
  • Maintain your heating system. Change air filters every 1-3 months — dirty filters waste energy and money. Have a professional check your system annually to keep it running safely and efficiently.
