Environmental Leadership
We launched new zero-carbon generation resources and continued developing several local renewable energy projects, including starting construction on the Country Acres Solar (344 MW) and Battery (172 MW, 4-hour) and Sloughhouse Solar (50 MW) projects, as well as moving the Oveja Ranch Solar (75 MW) and Battery (37 MW, 4-hour) project into a California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) assessment. We also celebrated Solano 4 Wind Project coming online, reinforcing our promise of smart, sustainable energy solutions.
Thanks in part to a strong hydro year, our 2023 Power Content Label (issued in 2024) reported that the power we delivered to customers was about 78% carbon free and about 45% renewable power.
We're identifying new opportunities for renewable energy. |
To achieve our ambitious goals, it remains critical for us to continue identifying new opportunities for renewable and energy storage projects, including solar, wind, geothermal and battery projects within our service area and throughout California.
In 2024, we partnered with Calpine Corporation on its successful Department of Energy (DOE) grant application to receive funding for their proposed Sutter Decarbonization Project, which involves adding a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project to the existing 500 MW natural gas plant, transporting the CO2 and sequestering it safely more than half a mile underground in saline geologic formations. While the DOE grant has since been pulled back by the new administration, existing carbon-reduction tax credits provide much more benefit to project economics and Calpine continues to develop the CCS project. If built, this CCS project is projected to store over 1.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually.
To help bring our customers further into a clean energy future, we offered multiple electrification incentives and programs, such as our Residential SolarShares program for low- and moderate-income customers, and supported building electrification installations for residential and commercial customers equivalent to 5,812 all-electric homes in 2024, exceeding our goal of 5,000 and bringing the total in our service area to more than 68,000.
Significant progress was made on electric vehicle (EV) efforts in 2024, including enrolling more than 1,200 vehicles from Tesla, Ford, BMW and GM through our Residential Managed EV Charging pilot and surpassing the previous year's charger installations by 138%.
