SMUD’s Road to Zero Carbon virtual forums are an opportunity to learn more about the progress on our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan to eliminate carbon emissions from our power supply by 2030 – the most ambitious carbon reduction goal of any large utility in the United States.

Meet the presenters
Rhonda Staley-Brooks
Director, Community Relations, SMUD
Leading community outreach, partnerships and events at SMUD, Rhonda oversees engagement with businesses, ethnic communities and nonprofit organizations to advance customer education across the utility’s service area. With an MBA and a BA in Child Development from Sacramento State, she brings 18 years of nonprofit executive leadership from her prior roles with Nehemiah Community Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sacramento. A Senior Fellow and board member of local organizations, she champions inclusive community initiatives in every dimension.
Misty Mersich
Misty Mersich is the Manager of the Distributed Energy Solutions Program Development & Planning at SMUD. Her team develops customers solutions for building & transportation electrification, energy efficiency, green pricing, load flexibility, and battery storage programs. Prior to SMUD, she worked as the Sustainability Manager for the City of Cupertino, where she managed the Sustainability Division, and was one of the key staff in the development and creation of Silicon Valley Clean Energy. Prior to that, she was a Climate Planner for the Sonoma County Regional Climate Protection Authority where she led the effort to create a multi- jurisdictional climate action plan and managed energy efficiency, water efficiency and electric transportation programs. Misty holds a BS in Business from Cal Poly Humboldt and a MS in Urban & Regional Planning from San Jose State.
Bryan Swann
Bryan Swann is currently the Director of Resource Planning and Commodity Settlements at SMUD. Bryan has over 25 years of professional experience in electric utility planning and analysis. As part of his Resource Planning role, he is responsible for coordinating SMUD’s integrated resource plan (i.e. 2030 Zero Carbon Plan), focused on decarbonizing SMUD’s electricity supply while supporting the electrification of vehicle and buildings across SMUD’s service area. During his 15-year tenure at SMUD, he has also served as Manager of Resource Planning, and also served as Manager of Commodity Risk Management, where he was responsible for managing SMUD’s energy commodity risk. Prior to joining SMUD, Bryan worked at Henwood Energy (later Ventyx Energy, an ABB company) as an energy consultant and project manager for nearly a decade, helping independent power producers receive financing for renewable projects and helping utilities with integrated resource planning. He also worked at the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) in Market Monitoring. Mr. Swann earned a bachelor of science degree in Business from California State University, Sacramento.
