Strategic Account Advisor
Meet Michael Corbett. He's a great listener, which is an essential part of his job as a Strategic Account Advisor for SMUD's Commercial & Industrial Account Solutions team. That's the department that works with our business customers.
Corbett came to SMUD with an abundant background in energy efficiency and building standards for new construction projects. Serving in his role as a Strategic Account Advisor, Corbett is able to tap into this energy background and to advise his customers on money-saving efficiency upgrades like lighting, HVAC and even water pump upgrades for his agricultural and water agency customers.
As part of the SMUD Major accounts team, Corbett works with a variety of customers, from agricultural customers and water agencies to small retail and property management companies. That variety means Corbett is on the road for at least half of his working hours, meeting customers on site to better understand their business operations.
A unique customer that Corbett enjoys working with is the Sacramento County Farm Bureau. Their office uses a small amount of electricity, but they're a big help in getting the word out about energy efficiency and SMUD to their farming brethren and fellow SMUD customers. The folks at the Farm Bureau see Corbett as a trusted energy advisor for them and the greater farming community. He connects with them in a personal way that works for their business needs.
"Since building that relationship with the Farm Bureau, I've had over a dozen farmers reach out to me in the last 6 months for energy information and I'm able to connect them to programs and expertise from all parts of SMUD," Corbett said. "Some of these farmers are outside all day and not regularly in front of a computer, so they are really appreciative to have someone to talk to that is not a machine when they call."
Another customer that stands out to Corbett is The Fishery. It is an aquaculture fish farm in Galt that specializes in raising sturgeon for caviar, as well as raising and harvesting other types of fish to sell to numerous gourmet fish markets in Northern California. The Fishery is about to embark on a large pump upgrade project that is expected to yield a 1 gigawatt/hour of potential energy savings.
Corbett likes to take advantage of the outdoor amenities that the greater Sacramento area has to offer. From eating out at fun restaurants in Midtown, to playing fetch at Lake Natoma with his Labrador Retriever or getting his hands dirty from organic gardening in his back yard in Orangevale, he and his wife have found their slice of paradise.

Say "hello" to Chantel Hoad, a Strategic Account Advisor at SMUD. Prior to coming to work at SMUD, she spent many years building a specialty in understanding the ins and outs of working with small businesses and nonprofits. Her passion in creating programs to help businesses build, grow and thrive has garnered her lasting relationships across the greater Sacramento region.
Now, she is tapping into all of her expertise and relationships with business resources to better serve the customers she works with here at SMUD as part of the Commercial Industrial Account Solutions team.
If a customer calls her in a panic because they have an unexpected change in energy demand, or they just need someone to sit down with on the computer and walk through their account or online application, Chantel is focused on giving one-on-one attention to help her customers with any of their energy needs.
This past summer, Chantel was delighted to see one of her customers receive a sizeable rebate for a custom design energy efficiency upgrade. Stikwood, a peel and stick design solution made with reclaimed wood for any interior space, installed new sawdust collection controls on their machinery in their Sacramento warehouse. This project is expected to save 157,529 kWh per year. That represents about twenty percent of the site's energy consumption for the entire year.
Chantel enjoys working at SMUD and she is thankful to be among the few SMUD customers living in the Roseville area. It's a little known secret that there is a slice of Placer County within SMUD's service territory and that's where she was set on living to remain a SMUD customer. Outside of the office, she spends time with her children, grandchildren and family living in the Sacramento area. "We do a lot of things together. We do a lot of boating, camping, traveling and recently my family has gotten into cruises."

Meet Brian Dwyer, a supervisor in SMUD's Commercial & Industrial Account Solutions team. Brian works with commercial business customers and supervises and mentors a group of 4 strategic account advisors.
Brian has been with SMUD just over a year and before joining the team he spent over 15 years in sales and account management roles, building teams and facilitating team trainings for the companies he worked in.
His training background has come in handy at SMUD where he's held team training sessions on building strong customer relationships and new services. The customer relationship is one of Brian's favorite aspects of his job.
When working with his customers like auto dealerships, large private schools, food and grocery chains, manufacturing companies, retail businesses or even nonprofits, Brian views his customers not just as business contacts, but as people. People who go home, have families, work hard and are experts in what they do. He sees value in bringing SMUD's energy expertise to their businesses so they can save money, grow and expand as businesses and help the greater community thrive.
Brian loves connecting with his community and jumps at the opportunity to get involved by coaching his son's sports teams or by heading up SMUD's annual charity golf tournament.

Say "hello" to Ben Dillen, a Strategic Account Advisor at SMUD. He's been in his role at SMUD for 1 year and loves the challenges and opportunities he experiences in this role that force him to step out of his comfort zone and ultimately grow, while having fun with his customers and SMUD colleagues.
What do you do at SMUD?
I've been working at SMUD for 1 year as a Strategic Account Advisor with the Industrial Account Solutions team – specializing in retail, hospitality and property management customer accounts. My core group of customers currently consists of grocers, property managers, and “Big Box” retailers. In addition, I was also recently given the opportunity to try something new and assist with accounts belonging to the State of California.
What's top of mind for your customers?
The notion of sustainability and consistently making conscious efforts to do everything possible in contributing to the creation of a better environment is top of mind for many of my customers. As a side effect, however, I believe that there’s also an inherent priority around learning what tools and resources are available for them in helping to do so. As a Strategic Account Advisor, it's my job to partner with my customers in helping to create a strategic roadmap that incorporates and addresses these needs, and assists with driving initiatives forward.
What trends are you seeing?
Emerging trends amongst my customers will continue to revolve around the application of more advanced technologies, and a greater need for self-service in certain regards. I think that more procedures and processes will continue to become digitized, and there will be an increasing interest in the potential for interconnectedness.
What do you like most about your job?
My favorite aspect of my job is simple: it's the fact that I have the capability to help people in so many different ways. I feel that I've always had a deep desire to put others before myself, and customer service is really just that. I also consider myself to be a very engaged and pensive listener, taking what I've learned and trying to create something that is better and more beneficial than it was before - when the need arises.
How about working at SMUD?
Definitely the people. My teammates are incredibly supportive, personable and love to smile – but I'd expect nothing less in customer service! SMUD really is an incredible place to work.
Outside of work?
My fiancé and I will soon be getting married, so a great deal of time in the past year has been spent wedding planning! It's been a fun experience, but has kept us very busy as well. When we do get some free time, we love to explore all the things that Sac has to offer. Food, entertainment, music and sports – we'll take it all.
