SMUD participates in the ENERGY STAR© Retail Product Platform, a program designed to encourage retailers to stock energy-efficient products, as well as improve the quality and selection of energy-efficient products.
We work with these retailers in our service area:

Look for SMUD signage at these retailers to find ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators, clothes washers, clothes dryers, smart thermostats, air conditioners and air quality products that can save energy—and money.
Induction cooktop/range
Must install an induction cooktop/range measuring 24” or larger. Both standalone cooktops and ranges with built-in induction cooktops are eligible. Electric-to-electric replacements qualify for a $100 rebate.
Gas-to-electric replacements qualify for a $750 rebate. They require a "before" photo of the old gas cooktop/range in place and an "after" photo showing the new induction cooktop/range installed.
ENERGY STAR® Clothes washers
Save energy, water and money by replacing your older-model clothes washer with an energy-efficient ENERGY STAR appliance. Plus, get $100 off select models at participating retailers.
- Offer valid only at The Home Depot® and RC Willey locations in SMUD's service area.
- Ask a store associate which models qualify for the SMUD instant rebate, given at the register.
- The City of Sacramento's Department of Utilities is offering a rebate of up to $125 when you replace an old washing machine with a new high-efficiency clothes washer. Learn which products qualify and apply here.

Heat pump water heater upgrade
Replace your water heater with a NEEA Tier III or IV heat pump water heater with a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) of 2.87 or higher.

ENERGY STAR® Refrigerator
Have an old, inefficient fridge? Upgrading to an ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator can save you money on your bill every month. Get $50 off select models at participating retailers.

HVAC replacement (heat pump)
Must have a qualifying two-stage package system (15 SEER2 minimum) or variable-stage electric heat pump heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system installed by a participating contractor in the SMUD Contractor Network.
Smart thermostats
Save energy automatically when you’re away. Smart thermostats can be controlled from anywhere, and some can even program themselves, heating or cooling your home at times that work best with your rate plan.

Thermostat recycling
Have an old mercury thermostat? Remove, replace and recycle!
We've partnered with the Thermostat Recycling Corporation to give SMUD customers a $30 rebate for each mercury thermostat you recycle through their program.

Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulb recycling
Did you know? In California, it's against the law to toss any light bulbs containing mercury into the regular trash. Because they contain small amounts of mercury, CFLs must be recycled. Find out where you can recycle these light bulbs.
Refrigerator recycling
Our refrigerator recycling program has ended, but SMUD customers can drop off their old fridges or freezers (working or non-working) at ARCA Recycling’s Sacramento facility and they will be responsibly recycled at no charge.
Get instant rebates on SMUD Energy Store
Instant rebates on SMUD Energy Store are applied directly in your cart. Select “Check rebate eligibility” in your cart and complete the verification process by entering your SMUD service address or SMUD account number. Any qualifying instant rebates will be automatically applied to your order after verification and agreeing to the Rebate Terms and Conditions.
