Investing in infrastructure

There is no silver bullet to solving the biggest challenge of our time. Supporting a clean energy grid will require investments on multiple fronts. Here are a few we made good progress on in 2022:

  • We proudly unveiled 6 large-scale lithium-ion battery storage units at our Sacramento Power Academy training facility in south Sacramento. It’s a pilot project that will demonstrate the feasibility of utility-scale battery storage at SMUD, which will help us continue to provide our customers and community with reliable, clean energy solutions when the sun’s not shining.
  • The opening of bulk substation, Station G, signifies a big step forward for grid reliability and resiliency, allowing us to meet the energy needs of our expanding customer base and electrification efforts. Station G is now serving our downtown network and gives us load-serving capacity for the anticipated growth to our region in the years to come.
  • Continuing our commitment to maintenance, SMUD line crews completed 1,200 planned pole replacements and installed 240,000 circuit feet of underground cable in 2022. We also finished 21 substation upgrades, including replacing transformers and other major equipment.
