SMUD Go Electric rebates
Rebates up to $2,500
Our Go Electric rebates help you make your house electric ready. Install a smart panel or subpanel and wire your house for electric appliances.
For residential electrical panel projects that do NOT increase panel size:
- Like-for-like meter panel replacement with Smart Panel or Meter Collar installation: $2,500 rebate
- Smart Panel or Meter Collar installation: $2,000 rebate
A Smart Panel and a Meter Collar (with a Smart Panel) are upgraded electrical panels that help manage loads to support future electrification without upgrading a home’s service amperage. Homeowners install one to enable whole home electrification without upgrading the meter panel.
If also completing a heat pump conversion, you can mix and match the following rebates as needed:
- Sub-panel installation: $500 rebate
- Add new range/cooktop circuit: $500 rebate
- Add new dryer circuit: $500 rebate
- Rebate for an EV circuit is available separately through SMUD’s Charge@Home program offers.
Important Requirements:
- Like-for-like means your panel amperage stays the same size pre- and post-replacement. For example, if your original panel is 100 amps, and you are replacing the meter panel, in order to qualify for rebate, the replacement must also be 100 amps. Projects that increase the size of the meter panel (e.g., upgrading from a 100-amp to a 125-amp or 200-amp panel) do not qualify for this rebate.
- Like-for-like meter panel replacement must replace an unsafe panel to qualify.
- For rebates requiring completion of a heat pump convers, customer must replace an existing gas furnace or gas water heater to a qualifying heat pump.
- $500 paid for each eligible subpanel or circuit, up to a total of $1,500.
- All circuits must be wired to the source (wire and breaker).
- Eligible circuits include: dryer and kitchen (cooktop/range)
- Install a subpanel if more panel space is needed to electrify the home.
- If a like-for-like replacement with a Smart Panel install is included with a subpanel and future appliance circuits, the customer is eligible for a total rebate of $3,000.
- Must use a participating contractor in the SMUD Contractor Network to submit rebates.
These specifications are a condensed version of guidelines outlined in the SMUD Contractor Handbook: Home Rebates Programs Requirements. Contractors are responsible for knowing the current program rules, advising customers appropriately and submitting rebates on behalf of the customer. If your contractor is not approved in the SMUD Contractor Network, they can complete a Contractor Enrollment Form to get started.
Rebates subject to availability of funding.
