Environmental Leadership
While proven clean technology can get us 80–90% of the way to our carbon-free goal, new technologies and innovative projects will help us close the remaining 10–20%. 2025 marked the completion of our Cosumnes Power Plant turndown project, which supports operational flexibility and delivers up to a 27% greenhouse gas reduction (~100,000 metric tons) along with ~$10 million in annual fuel savings. We also finished our Sloughhouse solar project, which added 50 MW of solar interconnected to our 69 kV system.
| Utility-scale solar projects, like Rancho Seco II, help bring SMUD closer to its 2030 Clean Energy Vision. |
To help us achieve our goal of carbon-free power by 2030 and improve reliability, we continued to work on a variety of utility-scale renewable projects. Since 2021, we’ve added over 1,500 MW of new carbon-free renewable energy to our power supply. It remains critical for us to continue identifying new opportunities for renewable and energy storage projects, including solar, wind, geothermal and battery projects within our service area and throughout California.
On the customer side, we offered extensive programs and services to support our zero carbon goals and a clean energy transition. Our Residential SolarShares program exceeded our enrollment goal by enrolling 2,100+ customers in 2025 and we delivered more than 1,800 all-electric dwellings through our Smart Homes program. With SMUD’s largest customers, we completed 400+ commercial electrification and energy efficiency projects, saving roughly 23 GWh, which is equivalent to 1,191 all-electric homes.
Enrollments in our My Energy Optimizer® and My Energy Optimizer Partner+ programs thrived in 2025 with 38,000+ and 1,500 enrolled systems, respectively. Customers took advantage of thermostats and demand response battery programs to help shift their energy usage, support grid reliability and increase the use of clean energy resources. In addition, our customers and community continued to embrace electric transportation opportunities, supported by 7,000 new customers enrolled in our EV rate and 650 commercial customers who got EV charging incentives. Electric transportation doesn’t stop with our customers, we’re leading by example with 29,000 zero-emission miles driven per month in our fleet, a 107% increase over 2024.
