Director Nancy Bui-Thompson, Ward 2

 Nancy Bui-Thompson was first elected in November 2008, becoming the youngest board member in SMUD’s history and the first Vietnamese American elected official in Sacramento County. Serving her fifth term, she is currently the longest-serving member of the SMUD Board, representing more than 220,000 constituents across Ward 2, which includes Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Gold River, Rancho Murieta, Galt, Wilton, and Elk Grove. During her 18 years of service, Bui-Thompson has served as Board President (2012, 2016, and 2021), and as Vice President (2011, 2015, and 2020).

Professionally, Bui-Thompson brings more than 25 years of executive leadership experience across the energy, healthcare, technology, consulting, and government sectors. She most recently served as Chief Information Officer of WellSpace Health, a nonprofit FQHC serving more than 140,000 patients. Her prior roles include Director of Transition and Integration at Health Net/Centene and Director, Technology Consulting at Public Consulting Group, following consulting work at two of the world’s largest and most respected firms - Accenture and Deloitte. She currently is Chairman of the Board of Glogens, an organic fertilizer company, and is a minority owner of Ciao Bella Restaurant and Hotel ValAmerica in Italy.

She has represented SMUD on national and international stages, sharing her expertise in energy innovation, governance, and utility leadership. From 2017 through 2026, she’s participated as a main-stage speaker at the Energy Thought Summit (ETS) in Texas, a featured speaker at DISTRIBUTECH, the world’s largest electric power transmission and distribution conference, as well as POWERGEN International and the WE3 Summit.

In 2025, the Energy Thought Summit named her Energy Thought Leader of the Year, and in 2024, the Conference of Asian American Professionals recognized her as an Outstanding Woman Leader. The Sacramento Business Journal honored her as a 2017 Women Who Mean Business recipient and a 2011 40 Under 40 awardee. In 2012, Bui-Thompson was awarded the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship from the German Marshall Fund of the United States, an international leadership program that brings together leaders from the United States and Europe to strengthen transatlantic cooperation and understanding on global public policy issues.
