Our lobby art gallery

art on display in the SMUD lobby

When we opened our Customer Service Center (CSC) in the ‘90s, we wanted it to be more than a model of energy-efficient design.

With its bright, airy and open public spaces, we knew it should be a home for public art. So was born the SMUD art gallery, featuring works by local artists as part of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission's "Art in Public Places" program.

The commitment to public art is nothing new for us, of course. Our Headquarters Building, built in the late ‘50s and located just west of the CSC, features a mural by a Sacramento artist then little-known – Wayne Thiebaud. Today Thiebaud's 1959 “Water City” is known worldwide as one of the artist's most notable works.

While we cannot predict if any of the local artists we welcome to our gallery space now ever achieve such recognition, we'd like to think it will happen again … and again.

Come see what you think. The art gallery is open during regular business hours, 8 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday in the lobby of the CSC, which is at 6301 S Street.
