Save money and carbon emissions by adding energy efficiency and beneficial electrification into your commercial building.

Our commercial new construction program, Integrated Design Solutions (previously Savings by Design), offers incentives when you build or renovate with energy-efficient and electrification technologies.

When you participate in the modeled approach, you'll involve SMUD early in the design process. This approach is best with large, complex buildings with non-standard equipment. It requires calculations and energy modeling using Title 24-compliant software. Your design is compared to the permitted energy code. Incentives can be up to $150,000 for owners and up to $50,000 for design teams per project plan set.

You can also participate by choosing the equipment menu approach for your electrification technologies. Participation at this level is ideal for smaller or less complex buildings with simple equipment. Incentives can be up to $50,000 for owners per project plan set.

There are two ways to participate in the program.

Modeled approach

Calculate energy savings specific to your building and receive up to a maximum $150,000 owner's incentive and up to a maximum $50,000 design team incentive.

  • Best for larger or more complex buildings with non-standard equipment or processes
  • Requires calculations and energy modeling using Title 24-compliant software
  • SMUD involvement must begin as early as possible and prior to 100% schematic design development for the owner and 50% schematic design for the design team

Equipment menu

Choose equipment that meets SMUD specifications and receive up to $50,000 in incentives. Details:

  • Best for smaller or less complex buildings
  • Incentives are based on simple equipment choices
  • SMUD involvement must begin early or there must be evidence of intent to purchase traditional, natural-gas equipment prior to awareness of the program
