Recap of 2023: Capital Region Small Business Week

This year we proudly powered the Capital Region Small Business Week. Entrepreneurs, business owners and business experts from public and private entities across the Greater Sacramento area came together to celebrate our region's entrepreneurial spirit and promote opportunities to foster business success.

The week kicked off with a Business Resource Expo, followed by ten separate workshops, luncheons, expos and multiple networking opportunities throughout the region with over 1,000 participants. We provided education and resources on doing business with us including commercial resources and programs.

Clean energy success story: MTI College

MTI CollegeGoing all-electric is better for your business, your safety and our environment. We’re helping commercial customers make the switch with incentives and energy-efficient solutions that maximize savings and promote electrification.

One customer making a successful transition to clean energy is MTI College, who recently utilized our Complete Energy Solutions (CES) program to save up to 23,460 kWh per year.

A year-round junior college with more than 1,000 students, MTI realized a need to have more control over their energy usage, starting with the installation of 34 smart thermostats across their campus.

“We recognized the need to have some IP-controlled thermostats because it was getting difficult to manage all the different HVAC units we have on campus. You didn’t know if there was a problem until after the fact, when you got a complaint.”

- Michael Zimmerman, President MTI College

Supplier Highlight: Anvaya Solutions

This month’s SEED spotlight shines on Shobha Mallarapu, President and CEO of Anvaya Solutions.

Shobha MallarapuAnvaya Solutions is a cybersecurity firm headquartered in the greater Sacramento region, offering services nationwide. In 16 years in business, Shobha is proud that Anvaya has helped protect over half a billion records for various organizations. Shobha explained, "We provide various cybersecurity services from risk assessments, penetration testing, compliance to various risk management services both in operational and information technology."

Anvaya Solutions won its first contract with SMUD by successfully forming a team with other companies that brought different capabilities to the table. Now, they do business with numerous government agencies. Shobha noted that, “It was a full circle moment when we were awarded SMUD's first Master Services Agreement as only one of two companies that was awarded all 8 categories!”

Working with SMUD’s SEED program continues to benefit Shobha’s business. She particularly appreciates that the program awards incentives to large businesses who subcontract to SEED qualified vendors. Anvaya Solutions took advantage of this opportunity by partnering with a larger company known as a “prime” and subcontracting with that prime to perform a portion of the contract. Shobha points out, “That gave us opportunities to get business which we otherwise would not have as a prime.”

She also recommends future bidders attend a “How to Do Business with SMUD” session to get started, subscribe to SMUD's Ariba system to learn about bid opportunities and attend SMUD’s Meet the Buyers Expo.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging (DEIB)

At SMUD, while our Economic Development & Partnerships team is busy spreading the message about our SEED program to our small business community, we keep Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) top of mind. Our Community Impact Plan and Sustainable Communities mission focus on enhancing the quality of life for all our customers and the vitality of all our communities.

We recently established formal partnerships with a variety of Property Business Improvement Districts (PBIDs) throughout our service area. These partnerships support clean and safe activities, business walks and events that draw business to commercial corridors and ensure that all small businesses have equal access to the many programs we offer.
