A- score for leadership in corporate sustainability by CDP
We’re proud to consistently be recognized by local, regional and national organizations for our sustainability efforts. For the 3rd straight year, we’ve attained leadership level recognition in corporate sustainability from the global environmental nonprofit CDP, securing an A- on our 2022 and 2021 disclosures. We were recognized for our actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop the low-carbon economy based on reported data. CDP’s annual environmental disclosure and scoring process is widely recognized as the gold standard of corporate environmental transparency. Through significant demonstrable action on climate, we’re leading on environmental ambition, action and transparency worldwide.
J.D. Power
For the 3rd year in a row, SMUD tied for 1st place in the J.D. Power Sustainability Index. The index evaluates electric utility customer awareness, engagement and advocacy for their local utility’s climate sustainability programs and goals. The index is measured on a 100-point scale based on 71,959 business and residential electric utility customer responses collected from June 2021 to May 2022.
The J.D. Power Sustainability Index recognition underscores our customers’ awareness and perceived value of the direction we’re moving with the 2030 Clean Energy Vision and our goal to eliminate carbon emissions in our power supply by 2030. Read the 2022 J.D. Power Sustainability Index
Based on our proven track record in environmental leadership over the years in the electric utility industry, our great customer service and vision for a carbon-free power supply by 2030, we became the 1st utility to receive certification through J.D. Power’s Certified Sustainability Leader - Electric Utility Certification Program and earned a J.D. Power Certified Sustainability Leader designation. Launched in 2021, the program recognizes electric utilities that provide superior customer engagement, awareness and advocacy for its climate sustainability goals and plans to address climate change. Zpryme Net-Zero Leader of the Year for 2030 Zero Carbon Plan
In 2022, SMUD CEO & General Manager Paul Lau was recognized by Zpryme and Smart Energy Water (SEW) as a leader of the year for our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan at the WE3 Innovator Awards event. The WE3 Innovator Awards honor companies and individuals who are advancing CleanTech in the water and energy space. The WE3 Summit Committee chose the award honorees from many publicly nominated innovators.
Cloud for Utilities ICON Award for Customer Innovation
SMUD’s Sustainable Communities program received an inaugural ICON Award from Cloud for Utilities, an advisory firm that provides education, best practices and the advancement of cloud models for the utility industry. We were recognized in the Customer Innovation category, which honors a project, program or initiative that has significantly impacted utility customers for the better. By leveraging resources across our community, the Sustainable Communities program aligns with our core vision to enhance the quality of life for all our customers through innovative energy solutions.
Ragan Corporate Social Responsibility & Diversity Awards
Our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan received an Honorable Mention in Green & Environmental Stewardship category and 1st place for our employee volunteer program. Ragan is an industry leading communications organization that delivers news, training and intelligence to thousands of communications professionals across the country.
2022 City Year Sacramento Community Bridge Builder Award
City Year was founded in 1988 as a national service program to unite young adults from diverse backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service. City Year has grown from 50 corps members in Boston to more than 3,000 members serving in 29 US cities, as well as in South Africa and the UK. The Community Bridge Builder Award is a new award designed to recognize a local organization that is addressing systemic inequities by connecting resources and talents to great and worthy causes, while anticipating the needs for future generations. The inaugural Community Bridge Builder recognized SMUD and the Clean PowerCity® initiative.
Escalent Environmental Champion
Escalent named SMUD an Environmental Champion and the 4th highest scoring utility among 140 utilities surveyed for environmental stewardship based on its Cogent Syndicated 2022 Utility Trusted Brand & Customer Engagement™: Residential study. Escalent conducted surveys among 79,223 residential electric, natural gas and combination utility customers of the 140 largest US utility companies (based on residential customer counts).
