Custom Incentives Program

Looking for ways to save money on energy bills? Our Custom Incentives program is designed for complex, large or industrial projects and can help do just that.

Your SMUD Strategic Account Advisor can help tailor an energy upgrade and incentive package for your specific business needs. Incentives are paid based on the amount of energy you save, and they can involve a wide variety of equipment and process improvements.

How it works

  • Review our Custom Energy Efficiency Procedures Manual
  • Custom Incentives are available for large, complex or uncommon energy efficiency projects
  • Projects are approved on a case-by-case basis
  • To qualify for incentives, your project must be pre-approved by SMUD prior to installation
  • Schedule an appointment with your SMUD Strategic Account Advisor for more information or to verify eligibility

Examples of qualifying measures and incentives:

  • Heating and Cooling Systems
  • Lighting & Controls
  • Refrigeration
  • Industrial process applications
  • Pump Energy Assessment Program
  • Retrocommissioning (RCx)

Ineligible measures

  • Measures installed before the project was approved
  • Power factor correction or power conditioning equipment
  • Technologies that fail to meet or exceed federal and state minimum standards
  • Measures that are not permanently installed and can be easily removed
  • Solar water heating
  • Building envelope measures
  • Pre-owned equipment
  • Duty cyclers
  • Plus more. For a complete list, contact your Strategic Account Advisor

Most common energy efficiency upgrades are eligible for rebates through the streamlined Express Energy Solutions program

Heating and Cooling Systems

  • High-efficiency chiller replacements
  • Packaged air conditioners and heat pumps
  • Evaporative cooling units
  • Data center cooling optimization
  • Variable speed drives on pump motors
  • Controls and energy managements systems for HVAC equipment
  • Cooling tower upgrades

Incentives:

  • $0.15 energy reduction
  • $200/kW demand reduction
  • Total incentive limited to up to 50% of project cost or $150,000, whichever is less

Lighting & Controls

SMUD has two options for Custom Energy Efficiency incentives on LED lighting systems:

1)  LED Lighting and Controls

  • New interior and exterior lighting and controls
  • Lighting and controls retrofits
  • Daylighting systems and dimmable fixtures
  • All fixtures must be listed on the Design Lights Consortium's Qualified Products list at designlights.org

LED Lighting and Controls Incentives:

  • $0.10/kWh energy reduction incentive
  • Total incentive limited to 50% of project cost or $150,000, whichever is less

 OR

2)  LED Lighting and Networked Lighting Controls (NLC)

  • A combination of new LED fixtures, sensors, network interfaces, and controllers
  • Qualified networked lighting controls (NLC) products can be found at designlights.org
  • All fixtures must be listed on the Design Lights Consortium's Qualified Products List at designlights.org
  • Products must satisfy the required NLC interiors system capabilities AND be:
    • Capable of demand response via OpenADR protocol
    •   Accessed by a graphic user interface via web-based application or browser
    •   Able to monitor lighting system energy consumption
  • NLC projects have specific requirements; contact your SMUD representative

LED Lighting and Networked Lighting Controls Incentives:

  • $0.20/kWh energy reduction incentive
  • Total incentive limited to 70% of project cost or $100,000, whichever is less

Refrigeration

  • High-efficiency chiller replacements
  • Refrigeration complete subsystem replacements
  • Electric chiller heat reclaim
  • Refrigeration evaporator fan controls
  • Demand control ventilation installation (CO2 sensors)
  • Motors and controllers
  • Plus more

Incentives:

  • $0.15/kWh energy reduction incentive
  • $200/kW demand reduction incentive
  • Total incentive limited to 50% of project cost or $150,000, whichever is less

Industrial process applications

  • Upgrades to industrial fans, pumps, and air compressors

  • $200/kW demand reduction incentive
  • Total incentive limited to 50% of project cost or $150,000, whichever is less

Pump Energy Assessment Program

  • Pre/post testing incentive on the installation and monitoring of qualifying energy-saving pump or system improvement
  • Applies to pumps greater that 25HP and associated systems
  • 500 provided for pre/post-monitoring for pumps successfully completing the program

Incentives:

  • $0.15/kWh energy reduction incentive
  • $200/kW demand reduction incentive
  • Total incentive limited to 50% of project cost or $150,000, whichever is less

Retrocommissioning (RCx)

  • $0.08/kWh energy reduction incentive
  • $150/kW demand reduction incentive
  • Two-part incentive:
    • Upon installation of physical measures, SMUD pays 50% of predicted incentive
    • After a monitoring period, SMUD will pay an incentive of up to 50% of the predicted incentive
