SMUD’s investment in dairy digester projects helps local business and creates a clean, renewable energy source.

The California Dairy Industry is an important part of California’s economy and our community. Find out how SMUD, Maas Energy Works and New Hope Dairy are partnering together to support local dairy farms and create a sustainable, carbon free future for California. Play the video to learn more.

New Hope Dairy

Meet Arlan and Arlin, co-owners of New Hope Dairy, one of four dairies working with SMUD to turn cow manure into clean, renewable energy. Dairy farming is in their blood. Making electricity isn’t. So, they’ve partnered with SMUD and Maas Energy Works so they can focus on what they do best -- making delicious California dairy.

Explore the Farm

New Hope Dairy centers around three main operations --feeding, milking, and caring for their cows. Play each video to learn more about the farm.

Making Energy

In 2019, SMUD brought New Hope Dairy together with digester developer Maas Energy Works. New Hope Dairy knows how to make premium California milk. Maas Energy knows how to take dairy waste and make clean, carbon free energy. It’s a beautiful partnership. Play the video to hear about how they work together.

The Digester Process

There are four steps to turn dairy waste into clean, renewable power. First, collect the cow waste. Then, remove the solids from liquids. Next, naturally occurring micro-organisms break down the liquid waste to create methane gas in the covered lagoon. Finally, that gas is used to run an electricity generating engine. Play each video to learn more about the process.
