SMUD hosts summit on clean energy jobs
Workforce program supports local nonprofits, education and training
On Monday, SMUD will host a workforce summit to increase awareness among the region’s nonprofits about career pathways and job development support related to clean energy technology and SMUD’s regional decarbonization plan.
“As we progress on our plan to deliver on 100 percent zero carbon energy by 2030, SMUD is investing in workforce development programs that prepare the region’s workforce for high-wage careers in clean energy,” said SMUD Chief Executive Officer & General Manager Paul Lau. “SMUD believes every community can participate in, and benefit from, the environmental, health and economic benefits of a clean energy future we’re building together.”

SMUD works with community partners to deliver hands-on training in emerging competitive-paying careers through equity-guided jobs programs. This year, SMUD launched the Six-Week Electrical Training Program in partnership with Northern California Construction Training. The students are learning basic electrical technician skills and gaining specific electrification and electric vehicle supply equipment knowledge that will open pathways to full apprenticeships and high-paying jobs. In June, SMUD will host a job summit focused on women in skilled trades. SMUD will also offer a follow-up summit later this year targeting potential workforce candidates and businesses with a demand for skilled energy employees.
