SMUD, Sacramento State and UC Davis Health celebrate opening of new child development center

Bright Path to Learning helps meet need for child care services

On Tuesday, SMUD, Sacramento State and UC Davis Health will celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Bright Path to Learning Child Development Center in East Sacramento.

SMUD, Sacramento State and UC Davis Health entered into a multi-party agreement in 2019 with the goal of providing quality child development services to their employees and the community at-large based on availability. This spring, Bright Horizons came on board as the operator of the new center, a 17,000-square-foot facility with modern, child-friendly amenities for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years old.

Bright Horizons commits to high-quality early education programs that follow standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Bright Path to Learning includes more than 15,000-square feet of outdoor space where about 200 children can learn and play, helping meet a growing need for excellent child care in the Sacramento region. Bright Path to Learning began operations on November 1.

“SMUD is proud and excited to see this important community project through with Sacramento State and UC Davis Health,” said Paul Lau, SMUD CEO and General Manager. “With the completion of this project, we have opened the doors to a safe and stimulating environment for young children to grow and learn and have provided families with a vital partner who’s deeply invested in their children’s well-being, education and development.”

“I want to thank our partners, SMUD and Sacramento State, for working with us at UC Davis Health to address the shortage of child care providers for working families in our area,” said David Lubarsky, CEO of UC Davis Health and vice chancellor for human health sciences. “This dream has been in the works for a long time, and thanks to creative teamwork, we’ve now opened these doors with our partners to help bridge gaps in child care for our working families and student families. As a major employer in the area, we know caring for children is as critical to a functioning economy as any road, electric grid or building, and we're grateful to offer these services.”

“I am thrilled that we opened the doors of this center, which meets a significant need for our campus and our community,” said Robert S. Nelsen, President of Sacramento State. “For years, our faculty and staff have struggled to find affordable, high-quality care near campus. The center not only benefits our employees – this partnership with SMUD and UC Davis Health continues to strengthen and deepen our impact on the region.”
