Sacramento Parks Foundation and SMUD celebrate state grant award to build playground
Design firm O’Dell Engineering will coordinate building of “EmPOWERment Park” on SMUD-donated land
Some substantial state grant funding, some surplus real estate and a lot of imagination and planning will soon deliver a brand new socially inclusive and sensory integrated playground to Arden Arcade, the first of its type in that area. Inclusive playgrounds are environments where everybody can play regardless of age or ability.
On February 25, the California Department of Parks and Recreation announced that the Sacramento Parks Foundation’s EmPOWERment Park, a $6.28 million project, was selected for funding.
O’Dell Engineering, headquartered in Modesto, developed the concepts and designs for EmPOWERment Park, which will be built at 1124 Bell Street near Irma Way on 1.43 acres—1.3 acres of which is surplus land donated by SMUD through the community-owned electric company’s Shine program, a community development program designed to improve and revitalize neighborhoods in the Sacramento region.
As a socially inclusive space, EmPOWERment Park will include power themed accessible play equipment, sensory integrated experiences, picnic and BBQ areas, shade structures, community garden beds, a public art display, a water play area, open space/turf, a court game area, a Bankshot court, off-street accessible parking stalls, restrooms, landscaping and safety lighting.
