The innovative board game incorporates soccer team statistics to teach and enhance math skills among the participating students. As they play, students are immersed in core STEM subjects and renewable energy concepts, presented in the context of a simulated soccer match. The game aims to foster a fun and dynamic learning environment that promotes enthusiasm for critical subjects.

Highlighting renewable energy and regional climate goals, STEM Goals connects students with programs and goals related to SMUD's ambitious 2030 Clean Energy Vision. Through STEM Goals, students not only learn about math and science but also gain valuable insights into sustainable energy practices that are vital for the region’s future.

STEM Goals represents an incredible opportunity to share the world's most popular sport directly into the hands of elementary students throughout the Sacramento region. Players navigate the board's soccer-themed field, using Republic FC player stats to score goals, while chance and action cards provide additional opportunities to learn about the sport.

Through a partnership with the PEAR Institute at Harvard, STEM Goals participants will have an opportunity to undergo skills assessment to see their growth through the game. Learn Fresh, a non-profit dedicated to providing innovative STEM learning experiences, supported the development of the board game in 2021.

The STEM Goals initiative is part of SMUD’s longstanding commitment to helping local educators connect students with STEM concepts and career pathways, especially as SMUD aims to decarbonize the region’s power supply by 2030.
