Multifamily Whole-Building housing rebates

Energy efficient incentives for comprehensive multifamily housing projects.

This program is designed for property managers of 5 or more units. It takes a whole-building approach to increasing overall energy efficiency. Incentives are paid based on the amount of energy saved and they can involve a wide variety of equipment upgrades. Projects must adhere to minimum criteria to qualify.

Tenant engagement

Project participants (property owner, manager or contractor must participate in SMUD's efforts to engage directly with the building tenants (residents) during various phases of the project. A formal tenant engagement plan will be provided by SMUD to the project participants for review at the time of application approval.

Low income

  • Properties with more than 50% of tenants participating in SMUD’s Energy Assistance Program Rate may qualify for an additional 25% more in incentives.

Please call 1-916-732-7650 with any questions. This program is funded on a first-come, first served basis for SMUD commercial customers. Projects must adhere to the time limitations of the program. Full terms and conditions can be found in the Program Manual included with the application form.

Incentive information

Go electric incentives

  • Heat Pump HVAC $600-800/unit
  • Heat Pump Water Heater $1,500/unit
  • Induction Cooktop $200/unit

Electrical engineering and permitting support. Applies to heat pumps with electric resistance supplemental heat - $750/project.

Bonus for electrical panel or circuit upgrades required to support new units with electric resistance supplemental heat - $500/dwelling unit 

Modeling incentives

Modeling incentives can be paid to a design team, upon customer approval. To apply for the Integrated Design Stipend, please reference the Design Team Incentives Application.

The Design Team incentive is available to an architect, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer or energy consultant (i.e. HERS rater)  who applies as Design Team Leader and is willing to document the energy modeling process prior to project construction. The Design Team Leader also agrees to submit the the Design Team Incentive Report as part of the Multifamily program application process.

  • Energy efficiency model $2,500/project
  • Electrification model $3,000/project*
    *Must submit both models. Projects limited to one incentive, not to exceed $3,000.
