Our summer programs reward you for shifting some of your energy use out of peak hours when demand is highest, which helps protect the grid and keep energy prices down.

Earn rewards for using less energy during peak hours

My Energy Optimizer® Peak ConserveSM (no longer accepting applications)

During Peak Events (high-demand days from Jun. 1 - Sep. 30):

  • Your smart thermostat automatically adjusts a few degrees. 
  • We’ll pre-cool your home to help keep you comfortable.
  • Events won’t last more than 4 hours.
  • We’ll notify you one day in advance of each event.
  • You can opt out of any Peak Event.

During Peak Events (high-demand days from Jun. 1 - Sep. 30):

  • Your air conditioner cycles off for 40 minutes each hour.
  • Events typically last less than 2 hours and no more than 4 hours.
  • We’ll notify you by email before each event (emergency events may not allow advance notice).
  • You can opt out of non-emergency Peak Events.

My Energy Optimizer® Peak ConserveSM (no longer accepting applications)

 Required equipment:

  • An eligible Wi-Fi-enabled smart thermostat(s).
  • A home Wi-Fi network that is always on.
  • Central air conditioning or an electric heat pump.

Required equipment:

  • A small “cycling” device is installed on your central air conditioning unit at no charge by a SMUD contractor.
  • Compatible HVAC equipment.

A smart thermostat isn't required.

  • $25 reward for participating each summer
  • I have a smart thermostat: $50 prepaid Mastercard® when you enroll your smart thermostat in the program.
  • I need a smart thermostat: Up to $100 off a qualifying ecobee, Nest, or Sensi thermostat on SMUD Energy Store when you enroll in My Energy Optimizer at checkout.
