22nd Street Underground Cable Replacement Project
Providing safe, reliable and affordable electric service, 24/7, to our customers and community is at the core of what we do. As such, we’re upgrading underground electric equipment to maintain reliable service and serve growing electric needs in downtown Sacramento. By proactively replacing underground power cables and equipment in this area, we’re investing in the reliability and growth for the downtown area.
The project involves installing about 8,500 linear feet of 21 kilovolt (kV) underground cable along 22nd Street. The 21kV cable path runs from 22nd and C Street, to 21st and R Street.
This work ties into SMUD’s Station E Substation, located north of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in downtown Sacramento.
- Overhead work is scheduled to start around March 1, 2025 and will take approximately 8 weeks to complete.
- All construction activities are done in a manner that is sensitive to the surrounding community. SMUD works closely with the City of Sacramento to ensure traffic disruptions are kept to a minimum and we minimize noise and other disruptions when possible.
- Any road or parking closures will be communicated in advance via door hangers.
