MED Rate to be updated in 2010
SMUD’s Board of Directors approved changes to the MED Rate effective Jan. 1, 2010 to make sure the discount accurately reflects the cost of operating electrically powered equipment for medical reasons, creating fairness for all customers.
New MED Rate discount
To help customers plan for the new discount, the change will be phased in over a two-year period. The first step, effective Jan. 1, 2010, includes a $15 flat discount and 15-percent discount on Tier 2 energy use.
The second step will be a $15 flat discount without the additional 15-percent discount on Tier 2 energy use. This second step will start Jan. 1, 2011.
On Jan. 1, 2011, the list of devices qualifying for the MED Rate will be updated. The list hasn't changed in 20 years and will be updated to reflect advances in medical technology and energy efficiency. Devices that use very small amounts of electricity may be removed from the list.
Energy Assistance Program Rate (EAPR)
This monthly discount based on household size and income can be combined with the MED Rate discount. This will help you get the most savings every month.
If you qualify, SMUD encourages you to apply. Customers participating in both discount programs receive a 35-percent discount on Tier 1 energy use, a 30-percent discount on Tier 2, a 50-percent discount on the $7 monthly service charge, plus a flat $15 monthly discount.
