Plug-in hybrid vehicles

SMUD has plug-in hybrids as part of its vehicle fleet. These vehicles get all the benefits of a true electric vehicle without the drawback of limited range. The vehicle can run on all-electric mode for running errands, but when the charge runs out, the downsized gas engine kicks in and the vehicle functions like a regular hybrid.

Zero Energy Homes

Caption: Premiere Gardens "solar subdivision" in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The 100 building-integrated PV homes are among the first of their kind in the nation and the newest solar vision for SMUD. They're known as "Zero Energy Homes" and they combine solar generation technology with improved energy efficiency capabilities.

Flat solar panels

Caption: Flat solar panels integrated with "cool roof" technology achieve increased energy savings in a commercial building. Cool Roofs reflect sunlight away from the roof mitigating heat absorbed by the building. The roof was installed atop a non-profit transportation agency helping people with disabilities and the elderly. SMUD donated about a third of the funding to install the renewable-energy efficient roof.

Solar-power shade structure

Caption: Solar-powered shade structure at the California State Exposition Fairgrounds produces 540 kilowatts. The shade structure is owned by SMUD; the power generated by it is fed into SMUD's power grid and is used daily by the community. Another array atop Cal Expo's racetrack horse barns adds another 390 kW equaling nearly 1 megawatt of solar-generated electricity.

SMUD's first PV array

Caption: SMUD's first solar array, PV-1, the first utility-scale solar array in the nation, sits in the foreground of the cooling towers at the decommissioned Rancho Seco Nuclear Station. Since PV-1 was constructed in 1984, five more arrays have been built at the site, producing 3.2 megawatts, enough electricity to power about 2,200 single-family homes.

SMUD Headquarters

Caption: Opened in 1960, SMUD's Headquarters building at 6201 S St. was lauded for its architecture at the time and is noted to this day for a mural by Wayne Thiebaud that wraps around the building's ground floor exterior.
The building houses the public auditorium on the ground floor, where the SMUD Board of Directors meets.
