Student Employment Program
In our continuing effort to promote good community relations and serve our customers, SMUD sponsors a college student employment program. While the participating students receive valuable work experience, SMUD benefits from their expertise.
Participating students work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full time during the summer and academic breaks, if work is available. This program emphasizes the student's full-time enrollment in school.
All student hiring is done through the local public colleges and universities (California State University, Sacramento; the Univeristy of California, Davis; American River College; Sacramento City College; and Cosumnes River College). A student who is not attending a local college but whose permanent residence is in SMUD's service area may be hired for a summer position.
There are three college student classifications:
- Office Assistant
- Student Staff Assistant
- Engineering Student Assistant
Program requirements:
Full-time student status- Engineering Student Assistants must be at least a junior in an engineering curriculum
- Grade point average of 2.0 or better each quarter/semester
- Relatives of SMUD employees cannot be appointed to student positions
