Applying for SMUD sponsorship

As a community-owned, local utility, SMUD works to advance the sustainability and prosperity of the Sacramento region. Communicating and connecting with our customers through participation in local community activities is a key priority for us, and sponsorships can be an excellent marketing channel. However, unlike a community foundation or other funding source, we are governed by the Municipal Utility District Act and are only able to invest sponsorship dollars to promote the customer benefits of our programs and services or support economic development.

We welcome learning more about your sponsorship opportunity and how it may fit with our marketing and economic development priorities. Please review the information about our sponsorship program below and complete this request form. Your request will be evaluated based on the details you provide, how close your request fits with our major initiatives and it will also be compared to other similar requests to help evaluate best value.

Please review the following sponsorship guidelines:

  • Sponsorships must have a connection to SMUD's mission and current business objectives
  • Sponsorships are considered within a calendar year and are for that year only
  • Sponsorships must provide a clear marketing value for SMUD
  • Sponsorship requests must be received 60 days prior to the date of the event

Events and activities that provide opportunities to educate or promote a SMUD program or support our Strategic Directives will be considered for sponsorship. Here are some examples:

  • Marketing packages associated with events, tradeshows or other community functions such as dinners or luncheons that enable us to reach targeted customer or stakeholder groups
  • Conferences that allow us to educate customers about a specific program or service or initiative
  • A partnership where the recipient organization is willing to work with us to drive customer participation in our programs or services
  • A partnership that advances the education and awareness of broader energy or environmental policy objectives in support of our mission
  • A partnership that supports regional economic development or direct business attraction, retention
  • A partnership that supports local small business participation in our SEED program

The following are examples of types of sponsorships that we cannot support:

  • Individual lobbying activities
  • Political events without our participation
  • Grants or general operating support
  • Religious activities
