Smart Meter Basics

Electric meters are getting smarter and SMUD has installed these new state-of-the-art meters at our customers’ homes and businesses. These “smart meters” will help us improve your service and, over time, will give you the information and tools you need to have better control over your energy use and your electric bill.

Smart meters are a major step on the path toward a "smart grid" and a smarter energy future. That’s because a smart grid will deliver electricity using digital technology to save energy, reduce costs, and increase reliability.

You’ll also have access to a powerful new online tool that lets you view your hourly, daily and monthly electricity use when you log in to My Account.

More options, smarter choice

Over time, smart meters will give you more options for controlling how and when your home is using energy and knowing what it's costing you.

Some of the benefits you may see in the future are programmable appliances such as dishwashers, and the ability for you to control your home's energy from a smart phone or computer.

Smart meters and the smart grid will pave the way for new technologies to let you make smarter choices about saving energy in your home and money on your bill.
