Solar Car Race

Solar Car Race

SMUD is proud to be the annual sponsor of the Solar Car Race at Cosumnes River College.

This year's event is Wednesday, April 18, 2018.

For this competition, high school students design, construct and race model cars powered by a 12-watt solar module. The competition is open to any high school in SMUD's service territory.

Registration:
Each school may register up to twelve students for the event. To register for the event, please have a teacher or school official contact suzette.bienvenue@smud.org.

The deadline to apply is March 1, 2018.

Additional information:
Each school registered receives up to six solar car kits. At the event, each participating student receives an event t-shirt.

Students compete for not only the fastest car but also receive trophies for best design, most sustainable, best engineering and most creative design. The races are held in adjacent to the campus quad at Cosumnes River College. The solar engineering and auto technology departments assist with the races and also have many exhibits promoting their field of study.

In keeping with the automotive theme, the Sacramento Electric Vehicle Association exhibits many of the available electric vehicles, with owners are on-hand to discuss the technology and benefits of driving a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).

This fun event is held during the CRC Earth Week activities. At this event, high school students are invited to visit and sit in on the various technical and arts classes at the college. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to not only visit a college campus but to experience college classes and talk with teachers and students.
