Carmichael Underground Cable Reliability Project

We’re committed to providing our customers with safe and reliable electric service. As part of our commitment, we’re upgrading underground electric equipment to provide more reliable service to customers in the Carmichael area.

Project benefits

Replacement of this underground cable will improve electric service reliability to thousands of customers in the Carmichael area.

The Carmichael Underground Cable Reliability project is in the city of Carmichael. Electric cable will be replaced underground, along Manzanita and Lincoln Avenues.

Around the beginning of March, you may notice SMUD employees or our contractors performing work in the areas shown in the project map below. The project is expected to be complete by June 2021.

What is involved in the Carmichael Underground Cable Reliability project?

This project will replace about 4,200 feet of 69kV underground electric cable lines.

What construction impacts can I expect?

When the work starts, you may see crews and trucks trenching the streets to install new conduits and cables. We don’t anticipate any interruptions in your electric service while we make improvements. If this changes and a planned power outage is necessary, we’ll notify you 48 hours in advance.

You may experience traffic, noise and other impacts when the work is underway. Traffic controls will be in place throughout the project. If activities will significantly impact an area, we’ll send a separate notice to the affected customers in advance.

How will SMUD keep me updated?

We’re committed to keeping you and your neighbors informed while this work is beingperformed. We’re happy to meet with any person or group to discuss the project. We’ll also update this website with schedule information, construction impacts and progress updates as the project moves forward.
