Small and Medium Commercial Connections Summer 2017
One energy solution leads to another
When Joshua Paul, local Chick-fil-A franchise owner, started driving a new electric vehicle (EV) earlier this year, his awareness of energy usage suddenly expanded. Before it was a necessity to find the next EV charging station to power a full drive to the Bay Area for example, he didn't pay much attention to how much energy he used, including at his own business.
This new-found energy awareness proved to be an easy conversation starter with SMUD Strategic Account Advisor Connie Hurdle who came into the restaurant one day to check in on her customer and talk with him about energy solutions for his business.
"Connie and I started talking about how to apply for SMUD's charge free for 2 years EV rebate and what it would take for a business to install an EV charging station in a parking lot. More importantly though, she helped me understand what SMUD's new Energy Management Solutions program (EMS) had to offer and how I could gain the control I need to manage my business," Paul said. "She knew my bill and usage better than I did and she had all the right information to help me understand our savings potential."
It turns out that Paul's restaurant can potentially save an average of 9% each year on energy usage with SMUD's new EMS program.
Real-time energy controls through SMUD's EMS program
Through a partnership with GridPoint, Inc., SMUD offers a program for business owners to have more oversight of equipment operations, control of equipment schedules and the ability to set limits and manage energy consumption, all through convenient web-based tools.
It's designed for businesses that otherwise may not be positioned to take advantage of large-scale EMS services. Whether it's a single site with a few HVAC thermostats, or a business with multiple sites and equipment systems, this product helps customers manage their energy usage with new levels of control to make changes from anywhere. They can improve operational efficiencies, troubleshoot inefficient equipment and set limits that will save energy and in turn, lower energy costs.
Paul has been a franchise owner of a Sacramento Chick-fil-A restaurant since 2012. In years past, he's been happy with SMUD's service but admits he didn't pay much attention to the details of his monthly bill. "Owning this restaurant with 65 employees keeps me busy, so knowing that I can control the HVAC settings remotely while I am out and about is what I am looking forward to the most. I'll be able to keep the restaurant comfortable for our customers and staff during rush hour on the hot summer days," said Paul.
Controls and savings realized through the new EMS system at Chick-fil-A will start to take shape in the next few months and in the meantime, Paul is focused on moving his business toward greater sustainability by using more recycled products, researching new opportunities to make his building more energy-efficient and maybe even adding an EV charging station to his parking lot in the future.
