Developer Connections Spring 2021

A commitment to our partners

As your community-owned, not-for-profit electric utility focused on providing carbon-free, affordable and reliable power, we’re committed to collaborating with our constituency to meet shared objectives aimed at reducing the impacts of climate change in a balanced and manageable way.

With a long history of leadership in sustainability, the SMUD Board adopted a Climate Emergency Declaration In July 2020  and asked staff to develop a plan to expedite carbon reductions due to the growing threats of climate change. The SMUD team presented its plan for the next 10 years, the 2030 Zero Carbon Plan, at the March 31 Board meeting in response. The plan identifies proven technologies like wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass energy; emerging technologies such as biofuel and electrification of buildings and vehicles among other strategies. Since then, we have continued  to evolve the Plan to reflect feedback received through engagement with policymakers at federal, state and local levels of government, at public board meetings and in and through our daily interactions with our residential and commercial customers. All of these were reflected in the final report presented and approved, unanimously by the SMUD Board on Wednesday, April 28. SMUD’s Commercial Development team is more committed than ever to ensuring that our development and builder stakeholders are considered as we collectively move toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a healthier and more sustainable future together.

2030 Zero Carbon Plan

For decades, SMUD has been a leader in clean energy and carbon reduction. The SMUD Board, CEO and General Manager, Paul Lau and the greater SMUD community continues this commitment through the draft 2030 Zero Carbon Plan to reach zero carbon emissions, while remaining anchored on our longstanding commitment to providing safe, reliable and affordable power.

This ambitious goal strategically positions the Sacramento Region as a climate change leader in both California and in the nation. It also creates regional economic diversity to provide new opportunities, jobs and income mobility for the entire community.

SMUD commercial new construction incentive programs continue in 2021

Our Integrated Design Solutions incentive program is SMUD’s premier commercial new construction/extensive renovation incentive program, paying incentives for both beneficial electrification (switching from inefficient gas technologies for space and domestic hot water heating to more efficient heat pump technologies), as well as energy efficiency. The incentive program also serves as a design assistance incentive program to support owners and design teams to further optimize their designs.

You can receive up to $150,000 for beneficial electrification technologies and up to $100,000 for energy efficiency. The two incentives are additive, for a potential incentive up to $250,000 per project. SMUD encourages early participation, with the rule of thumb, the earlier, the better. The incentive program addresses a wide variety of building types, from office buildings, commercial kitchens, schools, data centers and industrial facilities. It’s recommended to initiate a conversation with us about incentives at the Owner Project Requirements phase because the most influence for savings potential occurs at that early stage of design
