SMUD Cares to bring 100 volunteers to Boys & Girls Club of Greater Sacramento for work day

Story: Approximately 100 SMUD employees will each spend several hours at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Sacramento constructing an outdoor education space, landscaping, painting and doing interior repair work.

This volunteer effort is organized by SMUD Cares, SMUD’s employee giving and volunteer program. In 2016, SMUD Cares volunteers donated nearly 15,000 hours and nearly $500,000 to local nonprofits. SMUD Cares volunteers are on pace to match or exceed those totals this year with projects such as this one.

Background: SMUD Cares is SMUD’s employee giving initiative that raises money for a wide variety of nonprofits through payroll deductions and other fundraising efforts. Previously known as the SMUD Combined Charities program, SMUD Cares also arranges and supports over 70 volunteer efforts per year, in addition to coordinating employee service on 121 nonprofit boards. Local nonprofits that have received some of the largest donations in recent years include Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Sacramento Loaves and Fishes, WEAVE, Inc. and the Sacramento Children’s Home.
