SMUD has been a leader in electric vehicle research for nearly 30 years. During that time, SMUD has worked with major automakers and a wide variety of technology companies to help test and optimize EV equipment, and demonstrate real-world effectiveness.

SMUD began offering special electric vehicle rates in 1993 and currently offers a special EV rate discount that allows EV owners to save money when they charge their vehicles between midnight and 6 a.m. This allows owners to maximize their savings while mitigating the impact to SMUD’s electric grid for all customers.

Environmental leadership is one of SMUD’s core values. SMUD made its original commitment to electric vehicles in 1989 and has continuously supported electric vehicles as they help improve the air quality in the Sacramento region and reduce dependency on oil. More information about SMUD’s electric vehicle programs is available at smud.org/DriveElectric.
