Rotating Outage map - test
Rotating outages are the last resort to help stabilize our power grid and avoid widespread outages during a power supply emergency. If rotating outages become necessary, impacted customers will be given as much advanced notice as possible.
How it works:
-
During a rotating outage, a section of SMUD’s service area will temporarily be without power.
-
Each outage will last about 1 hour, then rotates to other sections until the emergency is over.
-
More than one section may experience an outage at the same time.
-
No section will be repeated until all sections have been cycled through.

FAQs
Learn more about rotating outages.
Can rotating outages be avoided?
We exhaust every option before starting rotating outages. This includes procuring power on the open market, activating load management programs and calling on business customers who have already agreed to reduce consumption.
You can reduce demand on the power grid by turning off unnecessary lights and limiting the use of air conditioning and large appliances.
Business customers can reduce non-essential lighting in garages, hallways, lobbies, warehouses and displays. Minimize using office equipment, supply and exhaust fans, circulating pumps, and maintenance and repair equipment to lower the demand for electricity.
Is anyone exempt from rotating outages?
Customers in Section 100 are excluded from rotating outages due to critical infrastructure or circuits that cannot be toggled on and off remotely. All other customers are subject to rotating outages.
How can I stay safe during a rotating outage?

If you rely on power for life-support equipment, we recommend you have a backup source of power. You can also enroll in our Vulnerable Population Program to opt in for additional communication.
Will my solar power be affected by a rotating outage?
Solar power customers are not excluded from rotating outages. During a rotating outage, all lines are de-energized to protect workers from solar over-generation power. Customers with battery storage should still have their backup power.
