Peak Corps: FAQs
Sign up! Call 888-742-SMUD (7683). You may also sign up through SMUD's Manage Your Account service. What if I have a special celebration planned?
You can be taken off Peak Corps for one day during the summer without losing your savings. This is a one-time-only offer for that special occasion you've got planned over the summer. We'll need two days' (weekdays) advance notice. Just email us at eanswer@smud.org or call us at 1-888-742-SMUD (7683).
Who can join?
You're eligible if you are a SMUD customer and your home has central air conditioning or a heat pump. Customers in newer homes, homes with upgraded insulation, or homes that are well-shaded will benefit most. Renters must gain the approval of their property manager. Window or wall air conditioners and evaporative coolers are not eligible. Additionally, customers operating child or convalescent care business in their homes are not eligible for this program.
What can I expect?
During periods of unusually high demand for electricity, SMUD may cycle Peak Corps air conditioners. In some situations, cycling may be continued beyond the time specified by the option, to ensure system reliability.
When does cycling occur?
Cycling can occur periodically during the day or on weekends, from June 1 to September 30.
Is the cycler safe for my air conditioner?
Yes, major manufacturers of air conditioning equipment have given SMUD assurances that Peak Corps cycling will not damage your air conditioner or void the warranty. SMUD will install and maintain the cycler at no cost to you.
How will I know if my air conditioner is being cycled?
If you have a ground-mounted air conditioner, you can look for the flashing green light on the cycling device attached to your air conditioner. Or you can log on to our Web site at www.smud.org, listen to cycling updates on select radio stations, or call 1-888-742-SMUD (7683).
How do I sign up?
Call 888-742-SMUD (7683). You may also sign up through SMUD's Manage Your Account service. Once you're enrolled there's no need to reapply. Your membership automatically continues from year to year. And, if you change your mind, you can move to a lower option or be removed from the program within 24 hours on weekdays.
