New meters to be installed
Your electric meter is ready for a change. SMUD is now replacing all traditional electric meters with “drive-by” models.
Drive-by meters send information electronically so SMUD can access it while simply driving through your neighborhood with specially equipped vehicles. That means SMUD will no longer need to access your property once your new meter is installed.
These advanced models significantly reduce the time and cost associated with reading meters, enabling SMUD to continue to offer our customers some of the lowest rates in California.
Since 2004 all new subdivisions in the SMUD service area have been installed with advanced meters. All broken meters have also been replaced with the new ones. New meters are now being installed, with installations to continue through the end of 2009.
SMUD will send you a letter and a brochure with additional information approximately two weeks prior to replacing your meter. When SMUD installers arrive to replace your meter, they will knock on your door to notify you of their presence. The meter replacement should take less than 10 minutes, with your power being interrupted briefly. Once the meter replacement is complete, SMUD installers will leave a door hanger to notify you of the meter replacement.
