Tree Pruning Contractors
SMUD utilizes two contractor company’s managed by SMUD vegetation management supervisors. Contract supervisors are in the field available to respond to any customer concern. SMUD conducts daily field audits to ensure contract specifications are followed.
All pruning is done in accordance with ANSI A300 pruning standards. Utility tree pruning utilizes the technique of Directional Pruning, a method recommended by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Arbor Day Foundation. This method removes entire branches to the main trunk of the tree where they would normally be shed. This type of pruning helps the tree ‘naturally’ protect itself from diseases and insect attacks. Directional pruning reduces growth toward the power lines by encouraging growth away from the lines. Trees pruned this way will be less susceptible to pest and diseases and will promote a healthier tree in the long run.
Tree pruners are required by the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CALOSHA) to be line-clearance certified in order to work near high voltage power lines. Each tree pruning company must have an ongoing line clearance safety program, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The program includes ongoing training, equipment maintenance and inspection programs to ensure tools are non-conductive for workers.
