Research and development
Since 1990, SMUD has been working with electric vehicle manufacturers to make EVs available to consumers and fleet users.
Since 1993, SMUD has collaborated with several different funding agencies and vehicle manufacturers to conduct electric vehicle research and development projects. These projects include the development of electric vehicle components, vehicles and systems.
Current projects
- Electric and hybrid buses: Putting today's clean air technology in public transportation.
- Fuel cell technology: Abundant natural resource with zero tailpipe emissions.
- Grid-connected hybrids: Best of both worlds...electric vehicles meets the combustion engine. All the benefits of an EV with none of the limitations.
- Intermodal transportation: Extending public transportation to your doorstep.
- Sacramento International Airport Low Emissions Vehicle Project: Replacing 75% of ground vehicle fleet with clean fuel models.
