New rates effective September 1, 2009

On June 16, SMUD's Board of Directors voted to adopt a three-step increase in rates to meet wide-ranging challenges in a difficult economy. The three-step process is designed to ease the transition and help customers plan for the change.

The increase in rates will help SMUD deal with the impacts of the current economic crisis and increased regulation regarding climate change, without sacrificing customer service or reliability. SMUD rates will still remain among the lowest in California and about 25 percent below neighboring PG&E.

SMUD's rates will increase by:

  • 5.5 percent
    on Sept. 1, 2009
  • 5.5 percent
    on March 1, 2010
  • 2.25 percent
    on Jan. 1, 2011
