Greenhouse gas reduction goals

SMUD Board adopts CMUA principles for reducing greenhouse gases

Read the news release

The SMUD Board of Directors has adopted the principles on greenhouse gas reduction developed by the California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA). The action supports the Board's strategic directive on environmental protection. (Read the strategic directive).

Greenhouse gases are a driving force of global climate change. The generation of electricity from fossil fuels is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.

The principles are a clear statement of SMUID's desire to meet California's goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining the Board's local decision-making on how best to do so.

The six principles pledge that SMUD will:

  • develop a greenhouse gases reduction plan
  • first acquire all available cost-effective, reliable and feasible energy efficiency and demand reduction resources when acquiring energy
  • then pursue renewable energy supplies and other non-greenhouse gas emitting energy resources and clean fossil resources
  • support standardized mandatory greenhouse gases reporting
  • provide measurement and verification of programs that reduce greenhouse gases emissions
  • and provide education for its customers on ways that they can reduce their greenhouse gases emissions and provide assistance where feasible.
