SMUD is the nation's sixth largest community-owned electric utility in terms of customers served.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District began providing electricity to customers on December 31, 1946. Read about SMUD's history.

SMUD generates, transmits and distributes electric power to a 900-square-mile service area that includes Sacramento County and a small portion of Placer County.

SMUD’s purpose is to provide solutions for meeting our customers’ electrical energy needs.
