People who have transformer boxes in their yards can help themselves, their neighbors and SMUD work crews by making sure there is at least eight feet of clearance around the green metal boxes and high-voltage cubicles.
Keeping plants and structures away from these components will help SMUD crews restore power to you and your neighbors more quickly during an outage. The eight-foot clearance also helps SMUD crews perform scheduled maintenance more efficiently.
A little elbow room also ensures a safer environment for SMUD field crews working with other high voltage equipment. Plus, clear spaces are required by the California Code of Regulations.
