Greenergy® Frequently Asked Questions
Q. If I sign up for SMUD Greenergy®, will my house really get electricity from green resources?
A. The green power that you pay extra for will go into the SMUD grid, and that energy will replace non-green power that we otherwise would have bought. Each month the energy required by Greenergy® participants is purchased as part of a special energy buy. Greenergy® purchases no fossil fuel generation and no nuclear power. SMUD Greenergy® dollars are directed only to renewable energy suppliers.
Q. What specific SMUD Greenergy® resources does SMUD now purchase?
A. Right now, SMUD has purchased output from the Sacramento County's Kiefer Landfill. A portfolio of renewable resources will be aggregated as the market continues to grow.
Q. Why doesn't SMUD generate or buy all of its energy from green resources?
A. Green power is usually more expensive than other types of power. To keep your rates low and to provide a mixture of power sources to meet customer load at any time, SMUD includes relatively clean natural gas resources and power purchased from others.
Q. How much will Greenergy® cost me?
A. There are four options to choose from when you join Greenergy®: the 100 percent option flat or usage rates and the 50 percent option flat or usage rates.
- 100 Percent Option: An extra $6 charge on your monthly electric bill to support Greenergy®. In return, SMUD will match 100 percent of your monthly electricity needs with special Greenergy® purchases from renewable resources for use on the SMUD power system.
- 50 Percent Option: An extra $3 charge on your monthly electric bill to support Greenergy®. In return, SMUD will match 50 percent of your monthly electricity needs with special Greenergy® purchases from renewable resources for use on the SMUD power system.
