Commercial Greenergy®
Commercial Greenergy® is the only local power choice that your company can make to ensure renewable power resources are built to serve Sacramento. When you join Greenergy, your company supports the generation of electricity from renewable resources such as solar, wind, and landfill gas. Your participation will distinguish your company as an environmental leader.
What are renewable resources?
Renewable resources, also called "green" resources are sources of energy that are restored by nature. Examples would be landfill gas, wind, solar, and small hydroelectric.
How do I participate in Commercial Greenergy®?
Choose from one of two levels:
SMUD Greenergy® is certified by the Green-e Energy Program. More
- All Renewables Option -- 100 percent
SMUD will match 100% of your company's energy needs with purchases from renewable resources for use on the SMUD power grid. The cost is an additional 1 cent per kilowatt-hour.
- Advocate Option -- 50 percent
SMUD will match 50% of your company's energy needs with purchases from renewable resources for use on the SMUD power grid. The cost is an additional 1/2 cent per kilowatt-hour.
- $10 Block Pricing
Renewable power through Greenergy can also be purchased in convenient blocks of 1,000 kWh for $10 per block. (12-month commitment for this option. See minimum commitment levels.)
Make the Commitment
By enrolling at the 100 percent or 50 percent Greenergy levels or meeting the commitment levles below for the $10 Block Pricing option, your company will qualify for special recongition from SMUD, including a recognition plaque and window decals, acknowledgement in local advertisements, and a kit with tips and tools to help you promote your participation.
Plus, participating in Greenergy helps your company earn recognition from the Sacramento County Business Environmental Resource Center and the U.S. EPA.

Cost example: A business using 5,000 MWh annually will need to commit to purchasing at least 6 percent of their electricity use in renewable power through Greenergy. That's 300 MWh or 300,000 kWh (1 MWh = 1,000 kWh). This company would need to purchase 300 Greenergy blocks during the year or 25 per month to make the minimum comittment level. At $10 per block, the total cost would be $250 per month.

Are there other benefits to Commercial Greenergy?
Yes, SMUD will send your business an official Green Power Partner membership static window cling and plaque that you can display at your business. Show your customers and employees that your company supports renewable energy.
Plus, when your company joins Commercial Greenergy®, your company...
- will automatically qualify for local and national recognition programs like the EPA's Green Power Partner program. More
- will be acknowledged on SMUD.org, in local news releases, print ads and on-site display materials.(See sample ad).
Building new sources of renewable power
When you join Commercial Greenergy®, SMUD makes a commitment to match 40 percent of the revenue it receives from Greenergy® price premiums with investments in new sources of renewable power generation. SMUD Greenergy® customers paid for the Arden Fair Mall Solarport, a photovoltaic power plant built in January 2003.
